Enables kainate selective glutamate receptor activity and transmitter-gated ion channel activity involved in regulation of postsynaptic membrane potential. Acts upstream of or within excitatory postsynaptic potential; glutamatergic synaptic transmission; and regulation of synaptic vesicle fusion to presynaptic active zone membrane. Located in endoplasmic reticulum; postsynaptic membrane; and presynaptic membrane. Part of kainate selective glutamate receptor complex. Is active in hippocampal mossy fiber to CA3 synapse. Is integral component of postsynaptic density membrane and integral component of presynaptic membrane. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; central nervous system; genitourinary system; immune system; and visual system. Orthologous to human GRIK5 (glutamate ionotropic receptor kainate type subunit 5). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Apr 2022]
