Enables cannabinoid receptor activity and voltage-gated calcium channel activity involved in positive regulation of presynaptic cytosolic calcium levels. Involved in cannabinoid signaling pathway; retrograde trans-synaptic signaling by endocannabinoid; and trans-synaptic signaling by endocannabinoid, modulating synaptic transmission. Acts upstream of or within axonal fasciculation and glucose homeostasis. Located in several cellular components, including GABA-ergic synapse; growth cone; and presynaptic membrane. Is integral component of mitochondrial membrane and integral component of presynaptic membrane. Is active in glutamatergic synapse and presynapse. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; genitourinary system; integumental system; nervous system; and sensory organ. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in obesity; schizophrenia; and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Orthologous to human CNR1 (cannabinoid receptor 1).
